The Demise of America

The Demise of America, Painting
The Demise of America
I love old signs. I like how they age and weather over time. I started a series of signs found in Elkins. A wind storm blew through Elkins about a year ago and it totally destroyed the McDonalds sign in town. First I thought it was hilarious. The sign was literally held together with bungee cords. Then I realized that it was a perfect example of our country. The most recognizable American company known around the world but barely hanging on. I took a picture of the sign and the next day they started working on it. I was glad I captured it when I did. This painting reminds us of the fragility of our iconic America. I painted it in the regionalist style. A timeframe that celebrated the wonderful uniqueness of American culture. I feel it is the best style for celebrating iconic American signs to remind us of what used to be.
